The Boy Scout Motto Works.

07 Feb

Be prepared. If you were in the Boy Scouts, you know that motto works. It also works well for presenters.

Once, I was invited to a meeting. It was a meeting that I’d hoped we’d have, but I wasn’t the one who could call it.

Nonetheless, for nearly two months, I’d been quietly preparing. I had done my research, pulling information from an annual review document. I had run the idea past a couple key individuals, securing tacit endorsements. I had built a draft business case. The stars were nearly aligned. All I needed was the meeting.

Then, lo and behold,… Read the rest

Tips from a politician (part two).

19 Jan

(this is a continuation of last week’s interview with Les Fugate, Communications Director for Kentucky’s Secretary of State)

What do you think of PowerPoint?
Well, I’m not a firm believer in using it because most people don’t use it effectively. PowerPoint can be a great asset, but we have to avoid allowing it to be a crutch. For example, don’t read your slides. Don’t even have so much text on them that they beg to be read. Instead, use PowerPoint to add to your presentation. If what’s on the screen is identical… Read the rest

Tips from a Politician.

10 Jan

Happy New Year!

From time to time, SpeakingStrong features interviews with experienced communicators. This week (and next), you are in for a treat. I had the opportunity to sit down with Les Fugate, the Communications Director for Kentucky’s Secretary of State. To say that Mr. Fugate is a communications “pro” would be a major understatement. He has been in the presentation hot seat hundreds of times throughout his career. During our delicious breakfast, he shared some insights on presenting effectively (though, he didn’t share any of his “The King” pancake breakfast).

Les had so many good tips so I’ve broken his… Read the rest

‘Twas the night before the big pitch.

10 Dec

Twas the night before the big pitch, when all through the house,
Not a creative thought was stirring, no clicks of the mouse.
The slide deck wasn’t finished, it wasn’t even begun!
My goose was thoroughly cooked if soon it was not done.

I had very little on paper, even less in my head,
“The pitch is Monday at 8,” I remembered he said.
A great opportunity had landed right in my lap,
But, like many presenters, I’d fallen into the trap.

I’d procrastinated again, my thoughts were all scattered,
I was not… Read the rest

Building in interactivity.

08 Dec

(caveat: for many of you, this post will seem painfully obvious – however, I submit for your consideration that even though we all “know” this, we don’t always intentionally do it – with that said…)

When you are presenting to a small group (say, fewer than 25 folks), be highly intentional about building in interactivity. Even if you are doing a ton of “information dumping” (e.g., briefings, trainings) you can build in interactivity by tossing out thoughtful and appropriate questions along the way. And, again, this is simple but often overlooked as presenters build “their points” but leave no room… Read the rest

B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Binoculars?)

01 Dec

Ah, it’s that time of year again. The time when we enjoy friends, family and great food. And, as if that’s not enough to be happy about, there’s the thrilling annual Healthcare Benefits Presentation! Reminds me of Christmas Eve!

Before I go on, I have to be fair here. Our company’s H.R. team actually does a great job with this. They give ample information, make the meeting go as swiftly as possible, provide access to the forms and contact people – so, as far as it can go, it goes very well at our company.

And, even the guest presenter… Read the rest

Presenting at the school meeting, a passing grade.

16 Nov

Well, I’m happy to report that I didn’t completely embarrass my boys. I gave the “keynote” address for our recent school meeting, and I held my own. I wasPresentation title slide pleased with how it turned out, and I promised a report, so here are a handful of observations.

For some context:

  • My wife and I are part of the educational underground – that’s right – we’re homeschoolers! Well, in part. Our boys go to a school (Dorothy Sayers Classical School) two days per week, and their homework/lesson plans are sent home for my wife to administer. So, call it

A lot riding on this one.

04 Nov

So, I was recently asked to give a presentation at my son’s school. It’s tomorrow night. Whoo-boy. Do I feel the pressure. I really want to do a great job, if for no other reason, I don’t want my sons to get taunted in the halls as the kids with the dad who botched the school meeting…they have enough baggage to overcome as it is (did I mention I’m their dad?).

Anyhow, I’m reminded this week of the cost of preparation for public speaking engagements. There are so many i’s to dot and t’s to cross. But, I’m not complaining.… Read the rest

Eye Contact Timing Exercise.

27 Oct

Here is a very practical way to improve your ability to make solid eye contact with an audience. If you haven’t read it, try reading Eye contact is a receiving device first.

I’m not a huge fan of worrying about speaking technique. I think it solves itself when other things are aligned. However, this one’s handy and folks have asked me about it in the past.

Let’s talk about eye contact timing – that is, the amount of time you spend looking into the eyes of your listeners. The goal for your eye contact… Read the rest

Case study: how to convey arrogance.

20 Oct

I attended a conference recently where there were a number of great presenters. Folks who were articulate, interesting and engaging. They will be the subject of many future posts.

But, there was one I just need to get out of my mind – so, let’s begin with him. In brief, he was a one-man, 20-minute case study in how to be an arrogant, self-absorbed presenter. Let’s take a few “what not to do” lessons from his talk, shall we?

Body posture.
For about 75% of his presentation, he spent it with one hand on his hip, suit coat pulled back… Read the rest
